Facilities

The main building of the SIU Transportation Education Center (TEC) is a 186,000 square-foot LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certified facility that houses the university’s Automotive and Aviation programs. A separate 32,000 square-foot building houses automotive components, materials, and approximately half of the school’s 150 vehicles.

The TEC has three large main labs. The first main lab (left) houses the diesel, fabrication, dyno, and emissions and drivability courses. The second lab (middle) houses the engine electrical, engine electronics, fuels, and emissions, and the body electrical courses. The third large lab (right) houses the brakes, steering, and suspension, drivetrains, engines, auto trans, HVAC, hybrid, and EV courses.

Each main lab also has a demonstrator classroom that includes a large enough area for workbenches and lab work as well as a single vehicle lift. This arrangement allows for classroom-based learning with quick access to workbenches and a vehicle for demonstrations.

An example of one of the three main labs (Lab Three) shows equipment and the in-ground lifts. Along the walls of the main labs include workbenches equipped with service information and equipment related to the coursework.
